1 out of 5 stars Go Tarts   October 28, 2008
Leah Dougan
I searched every store in this area for the GoTarts before deciding to purchase them online. I was pleased with the timeliness and free shipping I received. I, however, was very dissatisfied when I opened the case of GoTarts only to realize that they had an expiration date within 30 days of my receiving them. I hope they last past that due date as my family will not be able to consume them all prior to the expiration date. I will not be ordering food from this site again in fear of this happening again.

3 out of 5 stars NOT EXACTLY HEALTH FOOD AND NOT EXACTLY A REAL TREAT   September 2, 2006

IN A NUTSHELL: KELLOGG'S FINDS NEW WAYS TO GET POP TARTS INTO OUR SHOPPING CART

These little candy bar pop-tarts taste like a cross between a pop-tart and a fig newton, without the fig. They are OK to eat, but they are not exactly a treat and the label reveals that these 'snack bars' are not exactly health food.

ON THE MINUS SIDE: ARTIFICIAL COLORINGS TO MAKE THESE MORE APPEALING?

'RED DYE #40' is not how I like to get the idea that I am eating a strawberry [see label] and 'blue #1' too. 'TBHQ - for freshness', may explain the 2 year shelf life which is great for retailers but not so good for the human body.

ON THE PLUS SIDE: IF YOU ALREADY ENJOY POP-TARTS

'Go Tarts' have roughly the same amount of added vitamins and about the same percentage of fat as 'Pop Tarts', but a little less sugar than some varieties and of course no trans-fatty acid. They are sealed tight in mylar packaging and have an expiration date on the label.

There are much worse things that one can eat but these days consumers, like me, prefer to see new products that appear to making progress toward healthier, purier, fresher and more nutritious offerings.

BOTTOM LINE: NOT TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE IF YOU CAN EAT THEM IN MODERATION - under .27 each

In the end, if you already enjoy Pop-Tarts, you'll enjoy these as well with the added convenience of being user-friendly for commuters, students and travelers. I am not a big fan of Pop-Tarts, but my teenage daughter Angela has a real problem with her sugar consumption. This product could provide her with a sweet taste without going overboard, as long as I am holding onto the box.

3 out of 5 stars Good Flavor - Regular Pop-Tarts Are Better   September 1, 2006
Lonnie E. Holder (Sullivan, Illinois United States)
I have been a fan of Pop-Tarts since their introduction in the 1960s. The most disappointing development of Pop-Tarts was frosting, which now dominates in the stores in which I shop. I always thought the frosting was unnecessary, but the preponderance of frosted Pop-Tarts tells me that it must be very popular.

Frost Strawberry Go-Tarts seem to have the same filling as regular Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts. However, Frosted Strawberry Go-Tarts are packaged like a candy bar. The theory seems to be that the packaged Go-Tart will appeal to people that like convenience. Unfortunately, the Go-Tart crumbled even as I opened the package and subsequently tried to escape into all those places that you hope crumbs will never go. The crust on this pseudo-Pop-Tart seemed to me to be less flavorful than regular Pop-Tarts. The addition of icing to the top of Go-Tarts enhances the candy-bar nature of Go-Tarts, which I find annoying. I still consider Pop-Tarts to be a breakfast food or occasional snack food rather than a candy bar.

Frosted Strawberry Go-Tarts fail to meet any need I have. Pop-Tarts usually remain in one piece while eating. Pop-Tarts, though they also have a tendency to shed crumbs, shed fewer crumbs than Go-Tarts. I prefer the crust on Pop-Tarts. The flavor of the filling in Go-Tarts and Pop-Tarts seemed similar. However, the picture on the package of Frosted Strawberry Go-Tarts seems to show filling far thicker than what I perceived in the actual bar.

There are numerous ways of getting sugary calories. Pop-Tarts are high on my list. Go-Tarts will stay off the list. Good luck!

This review is based on a sample of the product provided to me by Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars tasty but not very healthy   August 29, 2006

These are tasty snacks that are portable (though subject to crumbling) and need no processing. However, they have wheat, milk, & soy--so if you are lactose or gluten intollerant, they're probably not for you. They have minimal nutritional value & a pretty high amount of salt, fat, etc. They are definitely NOT health foods. But, if you're looking for a quick snack & not too concerned about the above, this may be for you. I don't think the frosting adds much. Most of the flavor is in the strawberry (from the strawberry preserves in it--only the 4th largest ingredient after wheat flour, corn sugar syrup, & sugar). How you weight taste vs. nutrition will determine if you think this a good bet.

2 out of 5 stars A Million Little Pieces...an Unnecessary Portable Variation of the Old Pop-Tart   August 29, 2006
Ed Uyeshima (San Francisco, CA USA)

Call me a traditionalist, but I prefer the original, jam-filled Pop Tarts with none of the overly sweet frosting on top. As a child, I liked it right out of the toaster and would take it with me on the way to school. This portable variation seems to me like a misstep from the outset. The moment I ripped open the flimsy packaging, the Go-Tart bar crumbled out of my hand and onto the floor. Apparently the manufacturers at Kellogg's decided to use the same bread-like consistency they use for their standard Pop-Tarts on this bar. Especially with the shipping aspect introduced by Amazon, I think this is a mistake since I assume the whole idea behind this iteration of the snack is the portability aspect.

On top of the bar is the same execrable, sprinkle-laden white frosting I avoided once it was introduced as an enhancement so many years ago. Without the ability of toasting the bar, I find little point to the frosting except as a purposeless sugar-rush. Consequently, I cannot agree with its description as a "ready-to-eat bar". One bar, a little over an ounce, is 140 calories, thirty of which are fat. Even though there are more fattening bars you could eat, it still has an excessive-sounding 140 mg of sodium. I only tried the "Frosted Strawberry" variation because it was part of a free promotional package I received from Amazon to promote their new non-perishable grocery line. I think I'll just stick with a granola bar if I get the kind of munchies this bar is targeted to satisfy.
