No better than cheapest brand February 27, 2008 Joburti (Seattle, WA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered a case of these Crown Prince Smoked Oysters in cottonseed oil because I have found Crown Prince to have excellent products, especially their wild caught canned salmon from Alaska. These are some of the worst canned oysters I have ever eaten. If you have ever purchased oysters at a $1.00 store you will know what I mean. The oysters are tiny like barnacles and mealy and mushy with hardly anything resembling a smoked flavor. I was surprised to see they were produced in China because their other products are from Alaska and other places. I happen to love canned oysters and I don't mind if they are small, but not if they are just mealy with an odd flavor. The Reese colossals oysters and others from other companies in olive oil are delicious and they obviously know how to produce a rich smoky flavor. What am I going to do with case of oysters I don't want? It is hardly worth sending back so I guess I drop them in a food donation box. If you are really considering purchasing a case of these you might want to try a single one from your local supermarket first to see if they are what you're looking for.
The oil is especially good... June 18, 2007 Uncle Foobar (Brookline, MA USA) The thing i like about these (i buy CP's at Trader Joe's for $1.79 a can) is that you get some oil after eating them. It's nice to cook with and gives a pleasant smokey flavor to beans or other things. Foob
YUM!! April 22, 2007 W. Calvert (NW IL) I love smoked oysters, and this brand is the best I have ever eaten. Packed in cottonseed oil, they have a dark, rich taste, yet not oily Great with a good snack cracker, great for camping (which is what I use them for)
that's a lot of oysters August 2, 2006 Disway (OMA) The Crown Prince brand has been one of my favorites. I like their oysters not just for the price (at the local grocery store) but as well as for the flavor. Though here at Amazon, buying a pack of 24 oysters at once might be a bit extreme....
