4 out of 5 stars Good taste -- too much brown sugar   January 7, 2009
J. B Kraft (Palestine, TX United States)
As a Type II diabetic, I ordered a batch of this to keep in my brief case and office for a high-protein, low carbohydrate snack once a day.

While the flavor is very good -- smokey, beefy and sweet -- and the texture is chewy but not tough, it doesn't fill my needs.

As another reviewer noted, brown sugar is the second listed ingredient and it does include MSG, which I'd rather do without. However, sugars are 6 grams of a 28 gram serving, so I will look for a product that is lower in sugar. If you don't have this concern, then I think it's an excellent value and a tasty snack.

Finely chopped and mixed with some cream cheese, spices, herbs, and chopped onion, it will make a nice party dip, I think.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best jerky!   November 25, 2008
A. Smith (Germany)
I have to have this shipped to the states then my mother ships it to me in Germany. It's worth the wait. I just wish it could be shipped to an APO.

4 out of 5 stars Very good   August 16, 2008
R. Logue (KEIZER, OR United States)
Not perfect, but very good jerky at a very good price. Can't wait to try the "hot and spicy" next.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most other jerkies   July 25, 2008
B. Newman (Sonoma, CA)
This is better than most beef jerky products in supermarkets. It's quite moist and tasty. My only "beef" is that it's still overly salty for my taste.

2 out of 5 stars Contains MSG, nitrites, and loads of sugar   July 25, 2008

I ordered these based on the enthusiastic reviews, and when they arrived I was disappointed to see that brown sugar is the second ingredient, and this jerky also contains MSG and nitrites.

I'm sensitive to MSG and I'm not a fan of what nitrites do to the human body. MSG is a salt that tricks you into thinking something tastes better than it really does, and some people find it gives them headaches and numbness.

When I ordered, I had skimmed the product decriptions looking for ingredients, but couldn't find the them. Now I see the ingredients are listed lower on the page.

If you're like me and you avoid things like sugar, nitrites, and MSG, be sure to read the ingredients:

Ingredients - Sliced Beef, Brown Sugar, Water, Salt, Papaya Juice, Vinegar, Black Pepper, Garlic Powder, Monosodium Glutamate, Citric Acid, Sodium Nitrite.

Oh -- and by my standards, this jerky tastes ... just OK. A bit too sweet (6gm sugar per oz, to be precise, according to the label).

My favorite jerky I've found so far is "Gus's Really Good Fresh Beef Jerky - Original (No Sugar)" but unfortunately Amazon doesn't sell it.
