MUCH tastier than Lipton Rice and Beans October 7, 2008 Seattle Hobbit (Seattle, WA) I'm cooking this now after a long night of coding, before I take a short nap and then head off to work again. It's been a staple in my pantry for years -- a great dish especially on cold, damp Seattle evenings. I also like Zatarain's Hopping John mix (black eyed peas and rice). I've been known to toss shrimpmeat (the cheap miniature shrimp) into it, but usually eat it plain, adding less than 1 tbsp of oil instead of the recommended 2 to save on calories. The box does not list any meat or dairy ingredients, although as far as "natural flavors" go, your guess is as good as mine. If you like a bit more of a tomatoey flavor, a bit of crushed tomato or diced fresh tomato is a nice addition, too, as is a BIT of finely diced green peper and onion, although those who prefer being true to cajun convention would likely consider that to be sacrilege. Lipton's is very bland in comparison to Zatarain's, although it does cook more quickly. Given the choice between the two, there's no comparison -- Zatarain's is the more flavorful, hearty meal.
Add a little zip to the meal February 5, 2008 K. Stuckey (Port Huron, MI USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love how spicy this mix is, it is perfect. Easy to prepare and goes great with anything from the grill!

I frequently rely on Zatarains for an easy, yet delicious item for potlucks. It always gets the thumbs up!
Yum. September 3, 2006 LovingLife Well what else can I say. I love Zatarain's. Add a little sausage and you have a great quick meal.

I think that this mix does not taste as good or prepare as quickly as the Liptun Cajun Rice and Beans (6.4 oz). Not at all.
