Product Description Many years ago, in parts of Louisiana, Monday was not only wash day, it also included a lunch of steaming red beans and rice. The beans slow-cooked all day with smoky ham hocks or sausage along with the Louisiana trinity of onion, celery and bell pepper. Served with warm cornbread, red beans and rice often constituted the main meal of the day and quickly became a Southern favorite. The dish goes back well over two centuries. Today, Mahatma simplifies this tradition by combining long grain rice, quick-cooking red beans with a smokey ham flavor, enhanced with garlic, the Louisiana Trinity and Cajun herbs and spices which create a nice heat level. Just add your favorite sausage for a complete meal.

Red Beans and Rice January 19, 2007 Katherine G. Derby (New Orleans, LA United States) If you are missing real louisiana Red Beans and rice and want some NOW or if you don't have 3 or 4 hours to devote to making your red beans then this is for you. These rice mixes are some of the best foolproof real(not parboiled ) rice mixes ever. Louisiana founded and beloved by Louisiana natives. I send these to all my friends every Christmas. Try Black Beans and rice mix also. Much better than Zatarin's I use them myself often a New Orleans native.
My fave RB&R December 13, 2006 norska (Ellicott City, MD) I'm a Yankee. I didn't discover the joys of RB&R until I was over 30. In spite of this, I'm going to review Mahatma red beans & rice, and you can decide if my opinion is worthwhile ;) This is the best dry mix I've tried. It's the first one I ever had, and I haven't found anything better. Lipton was bland, Goya didn't really impress me. Zatarains has a different taste, so I actually like them both (and Z's is easier to find) But the smooth tasty sauce is the key to this product. I also like Popeye's RB&R, and this has a similar saucy goodness. It's really good with sausage, particularly some Hillshire Farms Lit'l Smokies mixed in!
